Absence from School

From time to time a child may be unavoidably absent from school.  Please notify the school by phone before 9am on the day of absence.  We ask that medical appointments in school time are kept to a minimum.

Every child of school age is obliged to attend school unless he/she is sick or there is some special reason.  Should you wish to take a holiday during school time, the law does not give you an automatic right to do this.  You must apply for permission in advance.  Such absences will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.  Each request will be considered individually taking into account the circumstances, such as: the nature of the event for which leave is sought; the number of days/sessions that would be missed; the frequency of the request; whether the parent gave advance notice and the pupil's attainment, attendance and ability to catch up on missed schooling.  If the school refuses a request for term-time leave and your child is still taken out of school, this will be recorded as unauthorised absence and you may receive a £60 fine per parent for each child.

Absence Request Forms, which give more detailed information on the law and on what may be classed as authorised or unauthorised, can be obtained from the school administrator or downloaded here.

If no satisfactory explanation is received for an absence, it may be referred to our Educational Welfare Officer.  She deals not only with non‑attendance but also assists children and their families where there are difficulties.
