Teaching and Learning

Our broad and balanced curriculum aims to be accessible to all pupils through creating appropriate learning experiences designed to meet their particular intellectual, emotional, physical and spiritual needs. It also aims to prepare pupils for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences later in life. The following areas of the National Curriculum are taught: English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, History, Geography, Physical Education, Art and Design, Design and Technology, Music, Religious Education, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) and a Modern Foreign Language(at Key Stage 2).Although pupils are taught in full key stage classes they are still working towards the objectives set for their age and ability group. The national curriculum states clearly what children are expected to have achieved by the end of years 2, 4 and 6.

We see the development of literacy as being fundamental. The school uses the following reading schemes: Rigby Star, Oxford Reading Tree and Pearson’s Phonics Bugs. These schemes are linked to the coloured book band system. Phonics is taught through the national Letters and Sounds programme along with some aspects of the scheme, ‘Phonics Play.’ The children in Class 1 receive a daily phonics lesson.

We have planned a four year programme of learning based on the National Curriculum. We work thematically planning half termly to ensure continuity and progression of learning in all subjects for all pupils.

Ofsted 2012 quotes:

"Lessons capture the pupils' enthusiasm and topics are well-chosen to interest both boys and girls.”

"Collaborative and cooperative working is promoted strongly.”

"The curriculum is a strength in the school.”

Wherever possible links in English and mathematics are made to our themes, however these two subjects are planned independently.

In English we aim to equip pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment. Our English units of work cover: spoken language which includes drama, formal presentations and debate, reading both word reading and comprehension and writing to include spelling, handwriting, composition and vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Each term teachers plan writing sequences through Babcock LDP teaching sequences. A balance is ensured to cover fiction, non-fiction and poetry.

In mathematics, teachers plan units of work from ‘The Rising Stars Mathematics Planning Framework.’ This scheme has been written by the Babcock LDP Primary Maths Team. The framework is built around four themes: number sense, additive reasoning, multiplicative reasoning and geometric reasoning. These themes make clear connections between areas of mathematics, encouraging children to use what they know and understand rather than treating each area of maths as separate and unconnected.

Our curriculum is enhanced by visits and visitors to the school on a regular basis. This includes visits by authors, theatre visits, sporting fixtures, field studies and residentials.
